Aging and Foot Health: Common Issues & Care Tips

Our feet, with 52 bones total (26 per foot), support daily activities like standing and walking. As we age, feet naturally degenerate, with more issues emerging after 40. Here are the key points:
Foot Development Traits
In infancy, feet are mostly cartilage, which ossifies as we grow. Arches form around 4-5 years old, and foot shape stabilizes by 7-8. Feet stop growing at around 13 for girls and 14 for boys. Flat feet and high arches are normal variations—no intervention needed for asymptomatic children. Feet stay healthy in teens and 20s unless injured.
Common Foot Problems After 40 & Solutions
Achilles Tendinitis
Stiffness and pain in the morning or after activity. Avoid triggers and use physical therapy or shockwave therapy.
Plantar Fasciitis
Heel pain, worse when getting up. Treat early with physical therapy, heel cups, or supportive sneakers.
Big Toe Arthritis
Pain when bending the big toe. Relieve with stiff-soled shoes or painkillers; severe cases may need minimally invasive surgery or joint replacement.
Morton’s Neuroma
Pain and burning in the ball of the foot. Use insoles, injections, or minimally invasive surgery (fast recovery in a week).
Bunions
Inherited in most cases. Early relief with wide, soft shoes or bunion pads; severe cases require minimally invasive correction.
The Importance of Vitamin D
Vitamin D aids absorption of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. Deficiency weakens bones, raising stress fracture risk. Get it from sunlight or foods like oily fish, egg yolks, milk, and mushrooms.
Summary
Most foot issues improve with early intervention. Non-surgical treatments are preferred first; minimally invasive surgery is an option when needed. With proper care, you can maintain healthy feet as you age.
