Homestyle Mashed Yam (Simple 5-Step Recipe)

Ingredients
1 pound yam
Water as needed (enough to just cover the yam)
Salt and pepper to taste (adjust to preference)
Instructions
Wash and peel the yam, then cut into 1-inch cubes. Avoid cutting too large to ensure even cooking.
Bring a pot with enough water to cover the yam to a boil. Add the yam cubes, ensuring they are fully submerged.
Reduce heat to low and maintain a gentle simmer. Cook for about 15 minutes. Test doneness by piercing a piece with a fork—it should be easily penetrated and not stick to the fork.
Drain the yam using a colander and transfer to a clean mixing bowl.
Mash into a smooth paste using a whisk or potato masher. Season with salt and pepper, then mix thoroughly.
